Tax Manager, Public Accounting
Location: Milton, ON (in office)
Employment Type: Full-time, permanent
Salary: $100,000 to $120,000, depending on experience
The Opportunity
Envy Consulting Group is partnering with an established public accounting firm to recruit a Tax Manager for its Milton office. The firm serves a portfolio of owner-managed businesses, professional corporations, and their shareholders, and it needs a designated CPA to own the corporate tax function. This is a technical ownership role. You will review T2 returns and corporate tax provisions prepared by staff, handle the complex corporate files yourself, run CRA reviews and objections, and be the person the team comes to with a tax question. You will also carry a book of clients as their primary contact and help the partners spot planning opportunities on owner-managed files. The role suits a senior tax professional ready to step up to manager, or an existing manager who wants direct client ownership and a clear path to senior manager.
Key Responsibilities
Corporate Tax
- Own the firm's T2 cycle: plan the season, assign files, track deadlines, and ensure every corporate return is filed accurately and on time
- Review T2 returns, corporate tax provisions, and supporting schedules prepared by staff, and prepare the complex corporate files personally
- Prepare and review T4, T5, and other information returns tied to owner-managed corporations
- Handle CRA reviews, audits, Notices of Reassessment, and Notices of Objection on corporate files
- Identify planning opportunities on owner-managed files (remuneration mix, corporate structure, capital dividends, intercorporate transactions) and bring them to the partners and the client
- Prepare and review T3 trust returns and T1 personal returns for shareholders where they tie to the corporate file
- Review GST/HST returns and advise on indirect tax questions arising from corporate engagements
- Keep current on federal and Ontario corporate tax legislation and brief the team on changes that affect client files
Year-End and Review
- Review compilation engagements, working-paper files, and adjusting entries prepared by senior and junior accountants
- Resolve technical accounting and tax questions raised during year-end work
- Sign off on files for partner review, with issues identified and resolved before they reach the partner
Client and Team
- Act as primary contact for an assigned portfolio of corporate clients and their shareholders
- Communicate outstanding information, deadlines, and recommendations clearly and in plain language
- Mentor and train senior and junior staff on corporate tax preparation and review
- Support the partners on complex client matters and tax-season workload planning
Qualifications
Required
- CPA designation (CPA, CA, CGA, or CMA legacy designations accepted)
- Minimum 5 years of progressive experience in a Canadian public accounting firm, with corporate tax as a primary focus for at least the last 2 to 3 years
- Hands-on experience preparing and reviewing T2 returns for owner-managed corporations, including associated and connected corporations, holding companies, and professional corporations
- Experience reviewing files prepared by others and giving clear review notes
- Working knowledge of ASPE and the year-end compilation process
- Experience handling CRA correspondence, reviews, and objections
- Strong client-facing communication, written and verbal
- Proficiency with TaxPrep or Profile, and with CaseWare or CaseView
Assets
- Completion of, or enrolment in, the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program
- Experience with T3 trust returns and estate matters
- Experience with corporate reorganizations (Section 85 rollovers, amalgamations, wind-ups)
- Experience with QuickBooks Online, Xero, or Sage
What We're Looking For
The partners want someone who can take the corporate tax function off their desk. That means a reviewer, not just a preparer: someone who catches the error in a junior's T2 before the partner does, and who can explain to a business owner why the answer is what it is.
You will bring:
- Deep, current knowledge of Canadian corporate tax for private companies
- The judgment to know which issues to resolve yourself and which to escalate
- A review habit: you read the whole file, not just the schedule you were asked about
- Comfort being the final technical check before a partner signs
- The ability to run a tax season: deadlines, workload, and staff capacity
- Plain-language communication with clients who are not accountants
- Discretion with confidential financial information
- A collaborative approach with partners and staff
Why Consider This Opportunity
- $100,000 to $120,000 base salary, depending on experience
- Single office in Milton, no travel between locations
- Ownership of the corporate tax function at a firm where the partners want to hand it off
- Direct relationships with business owners and direct access to the partners
- A clear path to Senior Tax Manager as the practice grows
- Support for the CPA Canada In-Depth Tax Program
- A diverse portfolio of owner-managed businesses, professional corporations, and family-owned companies
- A collaborative firm environment with established staff to review and mentor
