Where to take fall photos in Guelph: a simple Arboretum plan
The Arboretum is a useful place for a short tree-photo walk. Go in daylight, use its official map and choose a route that suits your group. A photo posted last week does not show today’s leaves.

Find a small scene instead of chasing a peak
The pleasure of a tree-photo walk can be as small as one leaf against dark bark. Give yourself one small photo goal instead of waiting for every tree to turn at once. Look at the leaves, bark and fallen colour you can actually see on arrival. A few close views can make a satisfying outing even when a wide landscape still looks mostly green.
An April 2023 first-time visitor liked the trees but found the route disjointed after meeting a closure sign. Replies suggested ponds, woodland trails and the university’s visitor map. Another family described losing its bearings and carrying children back. The useful lesson is to save the operator map and choose one part of the grounds, rather than assuming every trail leads neatly back to the same parking lot.
A marked, modest route gives you time to stop without feeling behind. Keep tripods and bags out of the walking line, leave plant material in place and keep dogs leashed. The university prohibits removing leaves and seeds without written permission. You can come home with close-up photographs without bringing part of the collection home in your pocket.

Pick a small scene, then a short route
An October 3 discussion favoured the Arboretum. A reply on October 6 said wide views were still mostly green. That is a dated observation, not a forecast for your visit. Choose trees, bark and fallen leaves you can see on arrival instead of chasing a promised peak.
The university says trails and parking lots are open from dawn to dusk. Indoor rooms have separate uses and hours. Keep the outing small enough to return before dark. A person using wheels needs a route-specific surface check, rather than a blanket claim that every path is accessible.

Match the entrance to the way you arrive
Drivers use the College Avenue East entrance, on the south side west of Victoria Road. Designated parking is free for Arboretum visitors, but it is not free commuter parking for campus. If you come on foot from the university, the directions take you from East Ring Road east along Arboretum Road to the information kiosk, then towards the Centre by the Ivey Trail or promenade.
The October 9 transit discussion shows why the approach matters. One newcomer had found the walk from a bus stop longer than expected; replies suggested other campus and College Avenue approaches. Compare the stop-to-entrance walk as well as the bus ride. Grounds are open dawn to dusk, while the Centre at 250 Arboretum Road opens weekdays, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., except holidays. An indoor stop is therefore a separate part of the plan.
